Abstract:

The book focuses on international population migration as one of the channels through which knowledge flows between countries. In particular, the role of inventors coming from eight Central and Eastern European countries (A8 countries), but living outside their country of origin, in transferring know-how to their home countries has been analyzed. The considerations undertaken in the paper has been mainly aimed at indicating how much knowledge from the destination countries flows to the A8 countries owing to inventors who left these countries and what factors are at the root of this phenomenon. The factors analyzed included the importance of the size of the migrant inventor population, the absorptive capacity of home economies, geographical, cultural and technological proximity between countries of origin and destination, and the "value" of knowledge transferred.
